USTEP deadline Feb. 23

Student Employment & Career Centre (SECC) Director Doug Rain announced Jan. 17 that USTEP, the U of S Summer Student Employment Program, is available again this year to provide subsidy funding for units wishing to hire student help.

But Rain cautions he usually receives requests for 180-200 student employees each year, and only about 120 can be funded.

He says the criteria used to assess applications is that USTEP funding is for "meaningful employment at a meaningful salary for a meaningful period of time."

Only faculty and University staff are eligible to apply for the subsidy funding, but all applications must go through SECC.

All funding sources treat the U of S as a single employer, with SECC handling all applications. Funds come from the federal government’s Summer Career Placements Program and the U of S Board of Governors.

Eligible students are U of S students with just one full-time summer job. Jobs are 30-40 hours per week for from six to 17.8 weeks during May 1-Aug. 31. The subsidy is up to $3 per hour, with students’ total salary being at least $6 per hour.

Application deadline is 4:30 p.m., Fri., Feb. 23. Application information and forms are on the USTEP website, at: www.secc.usask.ca/ustep/

Rain says if people aren’t able for any reason to use the website to apply, they can either have another staff member do the online submission, e-mail the information to: rain@duke.usask.ca or submit a hard copy to the SECC office.
