Saskatchewan’s Official Opposition party got a chance to take an in-depth look at the University of Saskatchewan, with a major all-day visit to campus Jan. 17.

Seventeen Saskatchewan Party members of the Legislative Assembly and three party staff toured facilities related to agriculture, education, health, economic development and Aboriginal affairs – and met with senior University administrators to get first-hand information about issues affecting the U of S.

The MLAs – including party leader Elwin Hermanson, along with colleagues like Bill Boyd, June Draude, Rod Gantefoer, Ben Heppner, and Yogi Huyghebaert – met with U of S President Peter MacKinnon, Vice-Presidents Michael Atkinson, Tony Whitworth and Michael Corcoran, University Secretary Gordon Barnhart, and Government Relations Officer Cindy Paquette, to discuss University matters.

They also recieved a major briefing and tour of the Canadian Light Source synchrotron, and toured facilities in Education, Agriculture, Innovation Place, and Wanuskewin Heritage Park. After the tours, MacKinnon hosted them at a reception at the President’s Residence.

Sask. Party post-secondary education critic Glen Hart, MLA for Last Mountain-Touchwood, said the MLAs found it "very useful and interesting and informative" to see campus and the "world-class synchrotron".
