SASKATCHEWAN NEUROSCIENCE NETWORK (2)

As the SNN Lecturer, Dr. Wise Young will deliver a public lecture and a seminar. Wise Young, Ph.D., M.D. is Director of the W.K. Keck Center for Collaborative Neuroscience, Spinal Cord Injury Project and Professor II, Rutgers University. He is recognized as one of the world’s leading scientists in spinal cord injury research. Dr. Young was part of the team that dicovered and established high-dose methylprednisone (MP) as the first effective therapy for spinal cord injuries. He established the Journal of Neurotrauma, and organized the Neurotrauma Society and the International Neurotrauma Society. He has many publications and has appeared on numerous leading TV and radio talk shows. He has received the prestigious NIH Jacob Javits Neuroscience Award.

JOHN GUNION RUTHERFORD MEMORIAL LECTURE

Fri., Feb. 9, at 12:00 noon, in Rm. 2302, WCVM, Dr. N. Ole Nielsen, Spruce Grove, Alta., will present this lecture on the topic, "Is The Veterinary Profession Losing Its Way?" Dr. Nielsen is a former Dean of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (1974-82), and the Ontario Veterinary College (1985-94).

Dr. Luxton is Prof. in the Dept. of Social Science and the Women’s Studies Programme at Atkinson College, York University. She is Director of the Graduate Programme in Women’s Studies and has published widely, with several highly acclaimed books and articles on gender dynamics, women’s work, and relations among work, family and class. Books she has authored, co-authored or edited include: "Feminism and Families: Critical Policies and Changing Practices" and "Through the Kitchen Window: The Politics of Home and Family".

DIABETES SEMINAR

Wed, Feb. 14 at 12:30 p.m., Biochemistry Prof. Bill Roesler will present a seminar entitled "Recent Developments in Diabetes Research" in the Dept. of Biochemistry. It will be held in Rm. B6 Health Sciences. This seminar will discuss the basis for the dramatic increase in the incidence of diabetes in Saskatchewan and around the world. Roesler will also present the results of a number of recent studies which may have profound implications for the treatment, improvement in quality of life, and potential cures for this disease. This seminar is intended for a general audience, so all are welcome.

SCIENCE SEMINAR

Dr. Chris McKay, Planetary Scientist, NASA Ames Research Center, will present a seminar entitled "Astrobiology: From Antarctica to Mars and beyond". Astrobiology is an emerging, multidisciplinary field dealing with the origin of life and the search for its existence elsewhere in the universe. Dr McKay’s seminar will focus on NASA’s planned missions to search for evidence of life on Mars and Europa. Sponsored by the Visiting Lecturer’s Fund, the College of Arts and Science, and the Depts. of Biology, Chemistry, Geological Sciences, and Physics and Engineering Physics. SOIL SCIENCE SPECIAL SEMINAR

Thurs., Feb. 8, at 3:30 - 4:30 p.m., in Rm. 1E85, Agriculture Bldg., Dr. Branko F. Peterman, President and CEO, University of Saskatchewan Technologies Inc. (UST), will present a seminar, "From Dream to Reality: How to Opimize the Potential of Your Research". Dr. Peterman is President and CEO of University of Saskatchewan Technologies Inc. (UST), the commercialization arm of the U of S. He will discuss a novel view of the role of university research that is currently being discussed in academic and government circles. The discussion will go beyond "research to publish" and will examine other areas of impact that research can lead to. All interested are welcome to attend.

COLLEGE OF COMMERCE/SIFC ABORIGINAL SPEAKER SERIES

Thurs. Feb. 8 at 7:00 p.m. in Rm. 18 Commerce (Goodspeed Theatre), Dr. Wanda Wuttunee, will present a lecture entitled "Rhythms of Discovery: Lessons in Aboriginal Economic Resilience and Vision". In her presentation, the success of economic development initiatives are examined in several Aboriginal communities in the context of scholarly debate and the particular contributions of Aboriginal perspectives. Dr. Wanda Wuttunee is a professor in Native Studies at the University of Manitoba and is a member of the Red Pheasant Reserve in Saskatchewan. Her work highlights economic development in Aboriginal communities and links her observations to Aboriginal wisdom and sustainability. TIMLIN LECTURE & POLITICAL STUDIES SEMINAR (2)

  • The 2001 Timlin Lecture, "Social Citizenship in 21st Century Canada: Challenges and Options," will be given by Dr. Jane Jenson on Mon., Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of STM. All welcome to attend; reception to follow. Dr. Jenson is a Professor of Political Science and Director of the Universite de Montreal/McGill University Institute of European Studies, and is a leading analyst in several research areas including citizenship, diversity, gender politics and Canada-Quebec relations. This is the seventeenth in a series of lectures established in 1983 to honor Mabel Frances Timlin (1871-1976), whose long association with the U of S began in 1921 when she took employment as a secretary in one of its departments. She went on to complete a doctorate and began to teach here in 1935. An expert on Keynesian economics, Timlin’s acaedmic activities included serving as an officer of the Canadian Political Science Association and as an executive member of the American Economic Association. In 1976 she was named a Member of the Order of Canada.
