‘GREEN CHEMISTRY’ WORKSHOP

Tues., Feb. 20, The Dept. of Chemical Engineering, College of Engineering will host a one-day "Workshop on Green Chemistry" in the U of S Thorvaldson Bldg. This workshop is bringing the world’s experts to discuss how these revolutionary materials may be used by industries in Western Canada. Topics will include how to make both new products and old processes cleaner. This workshop is designed for industry, researchers and senior students. For info. contact Dr. Yen-Han Lin at 966-4764.

ENDOCRINOLOGY UPDATE 2001

March 9 - 10, "Endocrinology Update 2001", jointly presented by Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development and The Canadian Diabetes Association - Saskatchewan Division, will be held at the Saskatoon Inn. The conference is directed to family physicians, internists, pharmacists, and diabetes educators. Other health professionals are welcome to attend. Guest speakers are Dr. Alun Edwards Assoc. POET LAUREATE LITERARY READING AND DINNER

Thurs., Feb. 8 – 6:00 p.m. dinner and 7:30 p.m. reading. The English Dept. of St. Thomas More College and the U of S College of Arts & Science invite those interested to a free dinner in the STM Chelsea Lounge followed by a reading by Saskatchewan’s first Poet Laureate, Glen Sorestad. Dinner seats limited, so RSVP by calling 966-8900. Sorestad grew up in rural Saskatchewan, earned his M.Ed. from the U of S, taught for 20 years, and co-founded Thistledown Press. When appointed last November he became the first provincially or federally appointed poet laureate in Canada.

POGO – PEDIATRICS,
OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY

The 47th annual "POGO - Pediatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics" conference will be held Feb. 8 - 10, at the Saskatoon Inn. It offers an update for family physicians, pediatricians and obstetricians / gynecologists on recent developments in the diagnostic assessment and management of many important and common problems of women and children, with emphasis on recommended changes in screening and management. Guest faculty are Dr. Victoria J. Davis, Acting Head, Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology, Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, and Dr. Carl A. Nimrod, Professor and Chair, Dept. of Obstetrics & Gynecology, University of Ottawa. The primary format is small-group interactive case discussions and practical workshops with an opportunity for hands-on practice in common obstetric, gynecologic, and pediatric procedures. The POGO 2001 Nursing Conference on Women’s and Children’s Health will be held Feb. 15, 16, at the Radisson Hotel, Saskatoon. Guest presenters include: Doris Bodnar, BN, MN, Cert. Psychiatry, Provincial Outreach Co-ordinator, Reproductive Mental Health Program of British Columbia, Vancouver; Kathy Crowe, RN, BSc, Public Health Nurse and Outpost Nurse, Supervisor, Reproductive Health Program, Region of Ottawa Carlton Health Dept., Ottawa; and Jane Garratt, RN, Diabetic Nurse Educator, Diabetes in Pregnancy Clinic, Foothills Hospital, Calgary. This workshop covers numerous issues relevant to the personal job search such as skill assessment, networking, obtaining relevant experience and how to tap into the hidden job market. ‘PD DAY’ FOR CLERICAL &
ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF

The fifth annual Professional Development Day for Clerical and Administrative Staff will be held Feb. 20 at Marquis Hall. Speakers include: Hon. Dr. Lynda Haverstock, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan; Dr. Angie Wong, U of S Extension Division; Gary Gregor, Corporate Coach and Sports Psychologist; and Atina Ford, who played with the Olympic Gold Medal winning Sandra Schmirler curling team. U OF S OBSERVATORY VIEWING

The U of S on-campus observatory is open to the public 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Saturday evenings from October-February. The observatory is on campus one block north of Wiggins Ave. and College Dr. Admission is free. On clear evenings, visitors may look through the telescope to view the colorful Albireo double star, the Hercules globular star cluster, and other celestial objects. The observatory also has an Adopt-a-Star program that offers a unique gift for stargazers. For info. call the recorded Astronomy Information Line at 966-6429.

FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME CONFERENCE

"Fetal Alcohol Syndrome - A Practical Approach" will be held on Sat., March 3 at the Quality Hotel, downtown Saskatoon. Guest speaker is Dr. Christine Loock, Assoc. Prof., Dept. of Pediatrics, University of British Columbia. The conference is directed to family physicians, pediatricians, primary care nurses and psychologists.
