Eighth campus sexual assault awareness day to be held Feb. 14

For the eighth consecutive year, the Sexual Assault Awareness Committee will take its message to the U of S community Feb. 14 with a 2002 Sexual Assault Awareness event.

Valentine’s Day was chosen for the event because of its message of love and relationships.  Heart-shaped cookies, a recipe for “”healthy relationships” attached, will be handed out throughout the campus community by committee members and volunteers.

In addition to the Feb. 14 event, the committee will carry out proactive, awareness-raising activities throughout the year with plans for posters and handouts, games in the Sheaf and other initiatives to promote education about sexual assault and healthy relationships.

The committee takes a collaborative approach to sharing information and developing its initiatives with representatives from the U of S Students’ Union (USSU), the USSU Student Help Centre, the USSU Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Centre, the USSU Women’s Centre, Security Services, Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Services, the Saskatoon Sexual Assault Centre, Student Health Services, the Graduate Students’ Association, and Student Affairs and Services.

One of those initiatives is the purchase of 75 posters from the Rape Treatment Center at UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, Calf.  To be placed on buzz boards around campus, the posters display powerful messages such as:

“Very often, the person who commits a rape or attempts it is someone you least expect…”; “The longer you keep it to yourself, the harder it is to make it go away”; and “When does a date become a crime?”.
