Special EventsRELAY FOR LIFE June 1-2, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m., the Canadian Cancer Society will hold its annual Relay for Life. Relay For Life is an overnight, non-competitive relay where cancer survivors walk a victory lap, and hundreds of candles are lit for loved ones. Teams of 10 fundraise a minimum of $100 per team member, set up camp, and walk or run at Griffiths Stadium for 14 hours. To become involved in Relay For Life, please call 244-2557. U of S Employee Appreciation Picnic The U of S Employee Appreciation Picnic will take place Wed., June 20, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Bowl (or Thursday, June 21, in case of inclement weather). Bring your own lunch or purchase a special BBQ combination, and listen to music provided by the University House Band. The lunch break will be extended by one hour for employees, and the day has been declared a casual dress day. Employees are welcome to bring their children to the picnic. Shift workers who are unable to participate in the daytime event are encouraged to attend the indoor picnic from 10:30 - 11:30 p.m. in Marquis Hall. The same specials will be available. CANADIAN MATHEMATICAL SOCIETY 2001 SUMMER MEETING June 2-4 the U of S Dept. of Mathematics and Statistics will host the Canadian Mathematical Society 2001 Summer Meeting. The department will extend a warm welcome to 300 participants from around the world. The observatory is on campus one block north of Wiggins Ave. and College Dr. Admission is free. On clear evenings, visitors may look through the telescope to view star clusters and other celestial objects. The Training Awards are intended to encourage promising graduate students to achieve a more holistic understanding of the relationships between environment, health and development. This years competition focuses on the study of economics in the context of ecosystem approaches to human health with emphasis on the exploration of how economic analysis can enhance our understanding of linkages between human health and the ecosystem(s) (natural and anthropogenic environments). Proposals are invited from students in the arts, social, pure or applied sciences. Students must be citizens of developing countries and/or Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, and must be currently enrolled in a graduate program at a recognized university in Canada or in a developing country. Members of the university community are invited to join them on the riverbank behind the Lutheran Seminary. The society also organizes a weekly early morning birdwalk leaving the Diefenbaker Centre parking lot, every Sunday morning in May at 7:00 a.m. Other special field trips are held all summer.
