Lifelong learning conference set

The U of S College of Education and the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation will host a conference on campus Nov. 24-26 for educators from schools, universities, the community, business, industry, unions, the professions and government to tackle the issue of "Lifelong Learning: Connecting Schools, Community, and the Workplace".

Conference chair Dr. Michael Collins, a U of S educational foundations professor, says over the past 25 years the term lifelong learning "has become at best a cliche and at worst it’s been hijacked." He says the conference is an attempt to "recover the substance" of what lifelong learning really means.

Collins says if true lifelong learning principles were adopted, there would be significant implications for teachers, schools, industry, and universities – such as more emphasis on student-teacher internships.

He says Ontario Institute for Studies in Education professor David Livingstone will give the keynote address, and the 150 expected conference participants will have a variety of workshops to attend.

Collins says the sessions will be enriched by poetry readings, creative video productions, learning through narrative, and a Bach concert recital. As well, he says, "real critical discourse" will be encouraged.
