In March of this year, the U of S Planning Committees Discussion Paper, Fostering the Teacher-Scholar Model, emphasized the necessity to document commitment to teaching for university decision-making. New and more experienced teachers alike are seeing the benefits of the portfolio as a means of reflecting on their teaching practice and supporting their applications for promotion or tenure.

You admire those who use instructional technology, but are you too intimidated to try it yourself? If so, join Marie for this session and learn some of the basics steps that will help you appreciate how PowerPoint can help you create slides, handouts, overheads, and simple instructional slide shows. The session will also discuss some of the limitations and restrictions of this instructional technology. This session is especially for graduate student teachers, but other beginners are very welcome to attend. Marie is also available for one-on-one consultation with instructors, Wed. 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Thurs., 1:00-4:30 p.m., or by appointment. Call 966-2245 or 966-2671.
COMPUTING SERVICES TRAINING
Computing Services offers a series of Information Technology hands-on workshops that are free to U of S faculty, staff, and students. Learn what the Web has to offer. This workshop gives a quick introduction to the Netscape Communicator program. It then takes you on a tour of the U of S web site, and other web sites outside the University. Learn how to search for and find information you need on the Internet.
- WWW Development:

- Dec. 12 & 14, 1:30-4:30 p.m.
Learn how to build and maintain pages on the World Wide Web. This workshop takes you step by step through how to build web pages at the U of S using nothing more than a web browser and a text editor. The course assumes you have no prior web development experience.
- Introduction to VMS:

This course explains how to use the VMS operating system available on sask.usask.ca, admin.usask.ca, amble.usask.ca, abyss.usask.ca, skyway.usask.ca, etc. It explains the basics of creating files, copying files, deleting files, organizing files into directories, and otherwise using the VMS operating system.
- Internet Tools for Windows Workshop:
- Dec. 13, 1:30-4:30 p.m.
This workshop explains how to connect your office or home MS-Windows computer to the Internet. It then shows how to set up and use common Internet tools like Telnet, FTP, Electronic Mail (using Netscape) and Newsgroups.
CENTRE FOR SECOND LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION
- Second Language Conversational Classes
Once a week for 10 weeks and you, too, can start speaking another language. Study French (levels 1 to 6), German (levels 1 to 3), Irish (levels 1 & 2), Italian (level 1), Japanese (levels 1 to 4), Russian (level 1), Spanish (levels 1 to 5 and translation) and Ukrainian (levels 1 to 3) at the Centre for Second Langage Instruction. Winter term - Jan. 15 to Mar. 22. All registrants receive an income tax deductible receipt. Register now!!
- Speaking, Listening, Writing & Grammar Skills
Improve your speaking and listening or writing and grammar skills for work, studies, or daily life. Effective Writing classes are held Monday & Wednesday (Advanced 4:45-6:45 p.m.; Intermediate 7:00-9:00 p.m.); Spoken English (ESL) classes are held Tuesday & Thursday (Advanced 4:45-6:45 p.m.; Intermediate 7:00-9:00 p.m.). Advanced level classes are suitable for graduate and undergraduate students, TAs and faculty. Classes start the week of Jan. 22 and run for 8 weeks. Cost is $215. Register at R.J.D.
