Revised November 2003
(1) General
On Campus News is the official newspaper of the University of Saskatchewan.
It is published 18 times per year by U of S Communications every second
Friday from September through May with one summer edition.
(2) Distribution
On Campus News is distributed free of charge to all faculty, administrators,
staff, graduate students, and members of governance bodies of the U of S, officials
of related agencies and government departments, major news media and in some
public locations in Saskatoon. It is also distributed for a cost-recovery fee
to paying subscribers such as University retirees, alumni and others.
(3) Objectives
Since its launch as the U of S newspaper in 1993, OCN has aimed to:
(4) Organization and Principles
Management of On Campus News is typically carried out by an Editor who reports
to the Director of Communications. The work of preparing On Campus News is the
responsibility of the Editor, who may be assisted by a Staff Writer, other Communications
staff and others as may be required, including freelance writers. On sensitive
issues, the Editor will consult with the Director of Communications, and caution
will be exercised in cases where publication of material may damage the reputation
of the University or members of its community. On Campus News reporters will
always identify themselves as On Campus News staff. On Campus News takes care
to observe legal limitations placed on publications, such as libel laws, and
it strives to present material that is accurate, unbiased, balanced and non-partisan.
Everyone in the University community is encouraged to express opinions, contribute
letters and provide story suggestions to On Campus News.
(5) Editorial Advisory Board
The Editor maintains an Editorial Advisory Board to provide a sounding board,
feedback and advice on all aspects of On Campus News. An effort is made to have
Board membership reflect OCN's readership. It is comprised of eight members:
(6) Editorial Content
Each edition of On Campus News will generally include a variety of material
news stories, feature articles, people profiles, feature photographs,
an Editorial, an Editorial cartoon, letters to the Editor, personal viewpoint
opinion articles, listings of coming events (all on-campus events, or U of S-sponsored
events held anywhere) or regular columns. When the Editor becomes aware of inaccuracies
published in On Campus News, a correction will be published in the next edition.
(7) Advertising
Paid display advertising is accepted for publication in On Campus News as a service for vendors and the campus community and to help offset OCN production costs. The advertising is accepted on terms and rates set by the Editor. An Advertising Rate Card containing rates, mechanical requirements and other aspects of OCN advertising is published each July 1. U of S departments and units receive discounted rates. Advertising revenue accrues to the On Campus News budget. All advertising is expected to be relevant to members of the campus community and must be within the bounds of the law and the community standards of the University. The Editor may seek the advice of the Director of Communications on any questionable advertising requests. On Campus News reserves the right to add the words Advertisement or Advertising Feature to any advertisement. Advertising in On Campus News may take the form of display ads printed in the pages of the newspaper, separate inserts produced by the advertiser and inserted into the folded newspaper, or special supplement sections printed as part of the newspaper.
