  • Dr. Maria Green, Prof. Emerita of French, 1963-1990, was decorated with the Palme Académique May 26, by Denis Bauchard, Ambassador of France. The honor is a prestigious declaration for dedication and services to education in France.



  • Prof. Dick Neal is Acting Dean of Arts and Science from July 1, 2000-Jan. 1, 2001. Originally from England, Neal has been a Biology professor since 1968 and has been Assoc. Dean Academic since 1992.




  • Prof. Bob Besant, Prof. Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, was awarded an ASHRE Technical Paper Award by th American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers at its convention in Minneapolis June 24-28. He received the award for his 1999 paper, Determining the Performance of Energy Wheels: Part I - Experimental and Numerical Methods. Co-authors were Carey J. Simonson and Dustin Ciepliski




  • Prof. Gord McCalla has received three distinct national recognitions recently. Gord has been appointed the Chair of NSERC grant selection committee, has been elected President of the Canadian Association of Computer Science (CACS/AIC) and has been presented with the Distinguished Service Award by the Canadian AI (Artificial Intelligence) Society, all within the past few months.




  • Dr. Ken Coates will become Dean of Arts and Science Jan. 1, 2001. He is currently Dean of Arts at the University of New Brunswick, at Saint John.



  • Lyle Sanderson, Head Coach of the Huskies track and field teams, was named Canada West 3M male coach of the year in May. Both his teams won the Canada West titles last year. The women’s team went on to win the national CIAU title, and the men came second in their nationals.




  • Jan Jaspar has been hired as Confidential Secretary to Tony Whitworth, Vice-Pres. of Finance and Resources, effective Aug. 1. She moved here recently from Calgary, where she worked in the oil and gas industry. She is originally from Saskatchewan.



  • Jane Forster, Operations Officer in Corporate Administration, will be on a secondment to the Dept. of Post-Secondary Education effective Aug. 21.



  • Merv Dahl has been hired as a Risk and Insurance Analyst in Insurance Services, effective Aug. 1. He brings more than 20 years of insurance underwriting and claims experience to the position. He has also been active in insurance education with the Insurance Institute of Canada.



  • Carolyn McPhee has become Confidential Secretary to the Assoc. Vice-Pres. Academic. She has nine years’ experience working in the Vice-Pres. Academic’s office, with Council committees such as Planning Committee and Academic Programs Committee.




  • Amber McCuaig will become the new Confidential Secretary to Michael Atkinson, Vice-Pres. Academic. She brings much experience in support of senior management at SaskPower, where for the past five years she was Assistant to the Director of Communications and Public Affairs. She moved to Saskatoon from Regina in July.




  • Sandra Calver became Confidential Secretary and Administrative Co-ordinator in the Vice-Pres. Academic’s office, effective Aug. 1. She had been secretary to the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research since 1995 and before that worked as secretary to the Assoc. Director of VIDO, as secretary to the VIDO board of directors, and as a clerk-steno in the Dept. of Electrical Engineering. She is currently completing her BA in English.



  • Muriel J. Montbriand, PhD, RN, research assoc. in applied research/psychiatry in the U of S College of Medicine has received the $1,250 Excellence of Writing Award in Clinical Practice, sponsored by ONS Foundation/Oncology Nursing Press/SuperGen and promotes the literary exchange of expertise.



  • Steven Lewis, a member of U of S Pres. Peter MacKinnon’s CIHR task force and former CEO of both the Saskatchewan Health Services Utilization and Research Commission and the Saskatchewan Health Research Board, has been named by federal Health Minister Allan Rock to the governing council of the Canadian Institutes for Health Research.



  • Florence Highway-Roberts, a social worker employed by the Sask. Institute on Prevention of Handicaps, has been named by federal Health Minister Allan Rock to the National Advisory Committee on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Highway-Roberts, a member of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, specializes in providing FAS education and support to Aboriginal communities in the province.



  • Dr. Bob Bone, a Geography professor with a special interest in northern geography, has been named the new Head of the Native Studies Dept.



  • Dr. Lea Pennock, Assistant Registrar (Enrolment Services) was elected President of ARUCC (Association of Registrars of Universities and Colleges of Canada) at its general meeting June 28 in New Brunswick. The presidential term is for two years.



  • Prof. Ernie Walker, of the Dept. of Anthropology and Archaeology has been appointed a Supernumery special constable by the RCMP, in recognition of his contributions to investigations for the past 26 years. He does forensic anthropology work for the RCMP and other law enforcement agencies, often helping to recover and identify human remains.



  • Marie Battiste, Prof. of Educational Foundations, and
  • Sakej Henderson, Director of Research for the Native Law Centre, have published a new book entitled Protecting Indigenous Knowledge and Heritage: A Global Challenge. ISBN 189583015x.



  • Dr. Tsutom Shimono, DDS, PhD, a professor and Head of the Dept. of Pediatric Dentistry at the Okayama University Dental School in Okayama, Japan, will visit the U of S College of Dentistry from Sept. 5-29 as a visiting professor. In June 1991, Okayama University and the U of S College of Dentistry established an affiliation to exchange mutual interest in research and teaching. From June 28-Aug. 8 U of S Dentistry Prof. Dr. Kunio Komiyama visited Dr. Shimono’s laboratory to collaborate on various children’s dental research topics. Dr. Shimono will now carry extend these projects involving U of S faculty members.
