Engineering alumni get Wall of Distinction

By Erin Taman

The College of Engineering unveiled a Wall of Distinction June 23 that will serve to honor its outstanding graduates.

The Wall will recognize the achievements of some of the best of the College’s graduates. U of S President Peter MacKinnon said at the unveiling ceremony these scholars deserve a place of importance in the College and the University.

Initially, there were 29 inductees. Six were selected by a committee, made up of the Chancellor, the President, the Dean and Assistant Dean of the College. Alumni may be nominated by faculty, staff and alumni from the College of Engineering.

In addition to those who are nominated, the 23 other inductees were all past C.J. Mackenzie Lecturers. The C.J. Mackenzie Distinguished Memorial Lecturer is chosen annually to speak to alumni and students.

Each year the C.J. Mackenzie lecturer will be inducted alongside two other alumni chosen by the committee.

The purpose of the wall as outlined by the College is that it "is intended to honor lifetime career achievements of distinguished alumni ... it will also provide our students with role models and display to the Saskatchewan public our pride in outstanding accomplishments by our graduates."

MacKinnon claimed that a good way to measure what kind of University we have, is to ask "What are our graduates doing now? Are they contributing to society, to their occupation or profession, to a professional association or to their province and country? By looking at our graduates we know that we are one of the best universities anywhere."

On behalf of inductees, Doug Baldwin, from the class of 1958 (chemical engineering) thanked the U of S and the College for the honor.

U of S Chancellor Peggy McKercher and President Peter MacKinnon unveil the Engineering College’s ‘Wall of Distinction’ in the main hallway of the Engineering Bldg. June 23.
