Dr. Mahowald

WHELEN LECTURE

Dr. Mary Mahowald, an internationally renowned philosopher and writer on medical ethics and feminist issues, is this year’s Whelen Lecturer. She is a Prof. of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the U. of Chicago’s MacLean Centre for Clinical and Medical Ethics. Her latest book is "Genes, Women, Equality". Her four lectures are open to faculty, students and interested members of the public, free of charge.

  • Sept. 11, in Place Riel Theature, U of S – On classical pragmatism and feminism.
  • Sept. 12, at the Mall Theatre, Royal University Hospital – On the ethical, social and clinical issues surrounding testing for late-onset disorders, disclosure of misattributed paternity, and access to genetic services.
  • Sept. 12, at 7 p.m., at the Delta Bessborough Hotel – "Just Genes? Gender, Ability, and Class Differences in the New Genetics".
  • The Whelen Lecture was established in 1987 through a bequest from distinguished U of S alumnus Dr. Myron Whelen. Its mandate is to bring internationally recognized authorities in disciplines taught at the U of S to campus.

MICROBIOLOGY & IMMUNOLOGY SEMINAR

Sept. 21 at 4 p.m., in Rm. A-226 Health Sciences Bldg., Jude Uzonna, a post-doctoral student in the Dept. of Microbiology & Immunology will present a seminar entitled "Experimental Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: Induction, Maintenance and Modulation of Immune Response in Leishmania major-Infected Susceptible Mice.

Dr. Mukhopadhyay

HARRY TOOP MEMORIAL SCIENCE LECTURE

As the 2000 Harry Toop Memorial Science Lecturer, Dr. Pranab Kumar Mukhopadhyay will deliver two lectures this month. Dr. Mukhopadhyay is a fellow of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. He is currently a top consultant and has had a long career in the oil and engineering fields.

CHEMISTRY DEPT. SEMINAR

Tues., Sept. 12 at 4 p.m., Prof. R. Steve Reid, U of S Dept. of Chemistry, will give a seminar entitled: "Thiomolybdates and Selenomolybdates", in Rm. 159 Thorvaldson Bldg. Refreshments served at 3:45 p.m. Everyone welcome!

GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES SEMINAR

Tues., Sept. 12 at 1:30 p.m. in Rm. 255 Geology Bldg., Dr. David Lumley, Pres. of 4th Wave Imaging, will give a seminar entitled "The Next Wave in Reservoir Monitoring: The Instrumented Oilfield". He is a Distinguished Lecturer of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Everyone is welcome.

FRENCH CLASSES AT STM

Professional French classes are now offered through St. Thomas More College and Language Training Canada. Originally designed for civil servants, this course will help you develop the skills you need to work in French in a professional setting. The "Programme de Base de Français au Travail" maintains federal standards for French in the workplace. Learn to speak on the phone, organise meetings, write business letters and more. PALLIATIVE CARE CONFERENCE FOR PHYSICIANS

Presented by the Cancer Education Program, Continuing Medical Education & Professional Development, U of S, to be held at Pasqua Hospital, Regina, Sept. 15 and 16 (am). An update on pain and symptom management and related issues in palliative care. Key note speaker is Dr. Sharon Watanabe, from the Palliative Care Program, Grey Nuns Community Hospital & Health Centre, Edmonton. Local palliative care speakers will also be featured.
