MILLENNIUM TRADITIONAL POWWOW

Tues., Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. in the Bowl, the Aboriginal Students’ Centre (ASC) will host a Millennium Traditional Powwow. Everyone is invited to attend and watch First Nations dancing and singing at its finest! For info. call the ASC at 966-5790

HOPE CANCER WALK

Once again, UofS faculty, staff, and students are invited to join the HOPE Cancer Help Centre’s 5th annual Race for Recovery. The 2 and 5 km. walk/run will be held Sun., Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. starting from the bandshell south of the Bessborough. Funds raised support HOPE’s programs for people affected by cancer, such as support groups, retreats, and a drop-in resource centre. See the next issue of On Campus News for more details. BOOK LAUNCHES

  • Thurs., Sept. 14 at 8 p.m., Plant Sciences Prof. Alan McHughen will launch his book "Pandora’s Picnic Basket" at McNally Robinson Book Sellers, 3130 - 8th St. East, Saskatoon. McHughen chairs the International Biosafety Advisory Committee. His book explains genetic technology inan accessible way, answers questions about food safety and the environment, and reveals risks and benefits of genetic modification technology.
  • Thurs., Sept. 28 at 7 p.m., U of S Secretary Gordon Barnhart will launch is book "Peace, Progress, and Prosperity", at McNally Robinson Book Sellers, 3130 - 8th St. East, Saskatoon. Barnhart is a former Clerk of the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly and of Canada’s Senate. Until becoming U of S Secretary in July 2000, Barnhart was Associate Director of the University of Saskatchewan International unit. His book is a biography of Saskatchewan’s first premier, Walter Scott.

  • Information Literacy: What the Heck Is It?
    Thurs., Sept. 28, 1:30 - 4 p.m. Facilitator: Linda Fritz, U of S Libraries. The role of the library in the university continues to evolve. This workshop is designed to give you some ideas on how the library can help you in your teaching and research. You will also have the opportunity to meet the librarians who will work with you.
  • Innovative WWW Resources & Tools: A Critical Perspective
    Fri., Sept. 29, 1:30 - 4 p.m. Facilitator: Daniel Mittelholtz, Coll. of Agriculture. The WWW is evolving in so many different ways that it is becoming very difficult to know what constitutes high-quality resource materials. If you are considering, are in the process of, or are struggling with the development and delivery of Web-based instruction, this workshop is for you.

WORKSHOP ON STARTING YOUR OWN HIGH-TECH BUSINESS

Sept. 29, from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., at Innovation Place. "Going Corporate - From the Lab to the Market". UST, U of Regina, and WestLink Innovation Network Ltd. (with the support of CTN and NRC/IRAP) offer a workshop that covers the process of forming a company to turn a technology into a marketable product or service. The workshop covers topics that follow the evolution of a company from the concept stage, through incorporation and into operations. Cost is $50 ($25 for students) and includes lunch. ASPA GOLF TOURNAMENT & BBQ

The first-ever ASPA (Administrative & Supervisory Personnel Assn.) Golf Tournament & BBQ will be held Sat., Sept. 23 at the Greenbryre Country Club. BUILDING BRIDGES

Competitive Bidding Workshop

Wed., Oct. 4, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. in Rm. 144 Kirk Hall, Purchasing Services will offer a half-day workshop on the Competitive Bid Process, conducted by Gerald Smeltzer, B.Comm., LL.B., LL.M., from National Education Consulting Inc. (NECI). This is ideal for staff who deal with any aspect of the Competitive Bid Process. Discussion will focus on Policies & Procedures, Update on Contract Law, Who Contracts on Behalf of the U of S, Duties to Treat All Bidders Fair & Equally, Avoiding Personal & Professional Liability, Copyright & Confidentiality. INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH & PLANNING CONFERENCE

Oct. 15-17, the U of S’s University Studies Group will host the ninth annual conference of the Canadian Institutional Research and Planning Assn., at the Delta Bessborough Hotel. The conference is open to people from universities, colleges, governments and the private sector who share an interest in Canadian post-secondary education. Keynote speakers are: Dr. Trudy Banta, Vice Chancellor for Planning and Institutional Improvement and Professor of Higher Education, Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis; Dan Corbett, President and CEO of The National Quality Institute, Toronto; and Neil Yeates, Deputy Minister, Sask. U OF S OBSERVATORY VIEWING

The U of S on-campus observatory is open to the public on Saturday evenings from May–July. September hours are 8:30-10:30 p.m. The observatory is located one block north of Wiggins Ave. and College Dr. Admission is free. On clear evenings, visitors may look through the telescope to view the colorful Albireo double star and the Hercules globular star cluster. The observatory also has an Adopt-a-Star program that offers a unique gift for stargazers. For info., call the recorded Astronomy Information Line at 966-6429.

SECOND LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION

Once a week for 10 weeks and you, too, can start speaking another language. Study French, German, Irish, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and Ukrainian at the Centre For Second Language Instruction. Fall term is Sept. 18–Nov. 28. All registrants receive an income tax deductible receipt. Register now!
