Around the Bowl

  • Dr. Morris Altman, Head of the Economics Dept., has just had a book published through M.E. Sharpe, Inc. in New York.  In Worker Satisfaction and Economic Performance — Microfoundations of Success and Failure, he argues that worker satisfaction with pay and treatment by the employer has a direct impact on the quality and quantity of their production and the economic performance of the firm.

  • Dr. Todd Pugsley, Assoc. Prof. of Chemical Engineering, attended the 10th International Fluidization Conference in late-May in Beijing, China. A paper on his work involving the use of electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) to image a pilot-scale fluidized bed was in the conference proceedings. The ECT system for fluidized bed imaging in Dr. Pugsley’s lab is unique in Canada. With grad student Helen Tanfara, he also presented a poster with findings on the effect of the size distribution of pharmaceutical granule on fluidized bed flow structure.  This work was partially funded by Merck Frosst.

  • Dr. Jim Dosman, Director of the Centre for Agricultural Medicine, was appointed in July by Federal Health Minister Allan Rock to the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Rural Health.  The committee will give Rock advice on how the Canadian government can improve the health of rural people and communities.  Rock also set up a one-year review of Canada’s Rural Health Strategy.

  • Tina Merrifield, Senior Communications Officer in the Office of Communications was appointed Acting Director of that office in late-July by President MacKinnon.  Tina replaces former director Heather Magotiaux who left this summer to take up the position of Vice-President of Advancement at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, N.S.
