Deaths

  • Ernst Oldach passed away Aug. 27 at age 66.  He retired in January 1998 from his position as a steamfitter in Facilities Management.  Ernst is survived by his wife Elisabeth, sons Klaus, Frank, Harald and Arno, daughter Karen,  and seven sisters in B.C. and Germany.


  • Dr. John S. Williams passed away Aug. 19.  Though he retired in 1983 as a professor in the Dept. of Chemistry, he continued to do research there until this year.  John was born in the Atwater district of Saskatchewan, served with the Royal Canadian Air Force until 1945, and completed degrees in Arts and Education.  He taught school in Battleford and Nipawin before joining the U of S faculty.  He is survived by his wife Gwyneth, daughter Pat Doyle, three brothers, a sister, and two grandchildren.


  • Suzanne Denise Miller passed away Aug. 19 at age 37.  She worked for less than a year as a chef at the U of S Faculty Club in 1997-98 before being forced to leave by illness.  She was born and raised in Saskatoon and studied cooking at Kelsey In stitute.  She worked for many years in that field in Vancouver, including as sous chef at the Pan Pacific Hotel.  She is survived by her mother Alma, sisters Penny, Glenna and Arlene.


  • Mike Sawchuk passed away Aug. 17 at age 74.  He worked at a painter with the U of S Dept. of Facilities Management for 25 years until his retirement in 1991.  Mike was born in Jasmin, Sask., spent early years in Ontario, and worked in construction there and in Saskatoon after returning here in 1952.  He joined the U of S staff in 1966.  He was a member of the Nutana Kiwanis.  He is survived by his wife Fern, sons Grant and Mark, sisters Phyllis and Millie, and two grandchildren.


  • Karen L. Bone passed away Aug. 5.  She retired in June 1998 from the staff of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the U of S.  She was a member of the academic pension plan, but no other information is available.
  • Love Virginia Churchill passed away July 25 at age 67.  She worked in the Western College of Veterinary Medicine from 1973 until her retirement in 1993 — from 1974 as an assistant department head.  Love was born in Hafford, Sask., took teacher training in Saskatoon, became a registered medical technologist, worked in Toronto and Peterborough, Ont., then returned to Saskatoon in 1973.  She is survived by mother Nettie, brother Lawrence, sister Pat, and stepson Mark.


  • Mildred Margaret Lang passed away July 20 at age 88.  She retired in 1978 from her position as a secretary in the President and Vice-President’s office, after 15 years of working at the U of S.  Mildred was born in Alsask, Sask., was very involved in the Saskatoon community including with CGIT, Kinettes, SPCA, Heart & Stroke, and the Cancer Society.  She is survived by daughter Tracy Yake, and foster daughter Dorothy McCallum, brother Gordon.


  • Barbara Cardenas passed away July 10 at age 62.  She was an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the time of her death.  Barbara held a B.Sc. degree in Nursing from College St. Scholastica in Minnesota.  She is survived by her children Jose, Andre, Liliana, Jorge, Maria and Elisa, sister Susan Lee, and grandchildren.


  • Edith Alexander Gilmour passed away July 6 in Victoria, B.C. at age 87.  She retired in 1979 from her position with the U of S Library.  Born in Saskatoon, Edith lived in England during the Second World War, and taught school in Donovan, Sask., before working at the U of S.  She was involved in the community while in Saskatoon, moved to Victoria in 1986, and in recent years travelled extensively.  She is survived by daughter Helen and sons David and Bruce, five grandchildren and two great-granchildren.


  • Leslie I. Mills passed away July 2 at age 70.  He worked in the U of S Crop Sciences Dept. from the mid-1970s until his retirement in 1995.  Leslie had farmed near Kenaston and took Vocational Agriculture at the U of S.  He is survived by wife Sylvia, sons Wesley and Curtis, brother Ralph, sisters Norine and Lynda, and grandchildren.


  • Dr. J. Allan Trew passed away June 30 at age 77.  He is a Professor Emeritus of Pathology, having served as a Professor of Biochemistry in the Dept. of Pathology at the U of S from 1963 until his retirement in 1985.  He was born in Lemsford, Sask., served in the Royal Canadian Air Force, and studied at the U of S and the University of Western Ontario.  He is survived by wife Josephine, sons Doug, Dick, Michael and Tim, sister Llewella, brothers Rod and Ross, and 10 grandchildren.


  • Edna Littlejohn passed away June 21 at age 84.  She worked at the U of S as a member of the non-academic staff from 1965 until her retirement in 1983.  She was born in Compeer, Alta. in 1917.  Edna is survived by husband Jim, sons Dave, Don and Bob, and twin sister Elsie.


  • Elizabeth Sulatisky passed away June 18 at age 90.  She worked as a member of the U of S non-academic staff for a number of years until her retirement in 1978.  Born in Hafford, Sask., Elizabeth moved to Saskatoon and worked at Golfe’s and at Marcotte’s.  She is survived by step-sisters Ann, Paula, Dot and Shirley.


  • William Jacob Stolte passed away June 18 at age 57.  He was still an active Professor of Civil Engineering, working at the U of S since 1970.  He was involved in many organizations, including the Bethel Christian Reformed Church and helped found the Saskatoon Christian School.  He is survived by wife Marge, sons Charles, Christopher and Thomas, daughter Karen, sisters Jenny and Mae, brothers Allan, George and Arnie, and grandchildren.


  • Yvette Kagis passed away June 16 at age 85.  She retired from the U of S in 1976 after working in the Library and Co-operative Studies since the mid-1960s.  Yvette was born in Siberia, lived in Latvia, Switzerland, England and France.  From 1948-67 she lived in Prince Albert, commuting to Saskatoon to gain degrees in Library Science and French Literature.  She is survived by her children Maija, Indra, Peter, and Aina, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


  • Dr. Franziska Turel passed away June 1.  She retired in June 1991 as an Associate Professor of Biology.  She joined faculty at the U of S in July 1960.  No further details are available.


  • Dr. Emil Karl Sauer passed away May 4 at age 71.  He was Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering, having been a Professor in the Dept. of Civil Engineering from 1967 until his retirement in 1994.  Karl earned his B.Sc. from Queen’s University and his M.Sc. from Cornell, and worked as an engineer for the Saskatchewan Dept. of Highways before joining U of S faculty.  Following his retirement in 1994, he formed a geotechnical consulting firm.  He is survived by his sister Eleanor.
