University of Saskatchewan students take part in Project Serve

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 17, 2012 2012-09-07-OTHER Saskatoon— Over 120 U of S students helped out the community through Project Serve, an annual one-day event that pairs students with 19 different community organizations around Saskatoon on Sept. 15.

"It's a great opportunity for students to really be involved and make a difference in our community," said Phaedra Hitchings, co-ordinator of community service-learning at the University Learning Centre. "The students worked on projects that the community partners identified, and were able to connect their experiences back to their studies or their own personal and career goals."
Now in its sixth year, Project Serve works with community organizations such as the Canadian Red Cross, Child Find Saskatchewan, Habitat for Humanity, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre, the Saskatoon Open Door Society and many others. Students helped with tasks such as building a home with Habitat for Humanity, assisting with harvest and fall clean-up at the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre's Garden Patch, and helping out in a language classroom at the Saskatoon Open Door Society.
