Today the University of Saskatchewan officially opened the Apotex Pharmacy Professional Practice Centre in the new Health Sciences Building. The Practice pharmacy will help students by preparing them to work in real-life pharmacy settings where they learn to counsel patients and work as a team.
The original Apotex Pharmacy Professional Practice Centre was created in the Thorvaldson Building and was supported by a $1.5 million donation from Apotex Inc in 2008. This donation continues to be the largest single gift ever received by the college. With the recent relocation of the College to the expanded Health Sciences Building at the U of S, the practice centre has been moved to its new home in the E-Wing of the building.
The Health Sciences Building offers advanced facilities to support U of S health experts to teach, research and develop and refine innovative practice skills. The project has expanded the college's learning resources for students, healthcare instructors and practitioners across the province. The U of S is home to a full range of health science colleges and schools on one campus.
The opening of the Apotex Pharmacy Professional Practice Centre will provide a state-of-the-art practice skills and simulation laboratory for students every year of the undergraduate pharmacy program.
The initial gift from Apotex Inc. has had a lasting impact on the students through scholarships and research opportunities, in addition to the practice centre. The continued support from Apotex Inc. has demonstrated how important pharmacy education is to healthcare in Canada.
