Morgentaler degree sparks UWO protest

LONDON, Ont. – The University of Western Ontario is facing protests over its mid-March decision to award Dr. Henry Morgentaler an honorary degree.

Ontario and national news media have reported that a member of Parliament and the university’s three religious colleges have protested the action. One UWO professor has already led a major protest march on campus. And anti-abortion activists from across Canada plan to demonstrate at convocation ceremonies when Morgentaler receives his honorary degree on June 16. They’ve also asked alumni to stop donating to the university in protest.

Last week, they appealed directly to the university’s administration to reconsider the degree committee’s decision to honour Morgentaler. It refused to reverse the decision. This will be Morgentaler’s first honorary degree.

UWO’s honorary degrees committee, made up of faculty, students, alumni and others, made the decision.
