United Way thanks U of S supporters

To the editor:

The United Way of Saskatoon would like to say thank you to everyone at the University of Saskatchewan who contributes to our community United Way Campaign. Your ongoing support enables United Way volunteers to invest donor funds back into our community, touching the lives of more than 50,000 people in Saskatoon, one of three being a child.

By giving to United Way – the city’s largest non-government funder of human care agencies – you have the assurance that your donation will be invested for the greatest impact. Unlike other funding, United Way funds are invested into agency core operations. This allows agencies to focus on helping those who require services rather than using scarce resources to keep their doors open.

Over the years, United Way has developed a bird’s-eye view of our community, not just of all the agencies in Saskatoon, but also of the social issues. We draw people and organizations together so that we can look at long-term solutions or prevention.

Your donations to our Community Fund support more than 180 programs and services through 31 agencies in our community.

The five priority areas are: giving children a healthy start and supporting families under stress; ensuring safety and freedom from violence; addressing hunger and the impact of poverty; providing ways for people to live with dignity and independence; and building our community’s capacity to care.

Donations from the U of S form a cornerstone of our Community Campaign. Last year donations from the U of S amounted to more than $87,974 – $58,098 came through the Charitable Donations Payroll Deduction Plan and $29,876 came directly from University employees. Last year U of S employees also led the community in our Leadership Giving Program; in 2003, 38 of the 584 citizens of Saskatoon who donated $600 or more to the campaign came from the U of S.

Our Board volunteers set a goal of $2.7 million. We anticipate that the U of S will once again lead the community in support for our Community Fund. We are proud of your outstanding support, and of the long-time relationships we have with U of S employees and your unions – ASPA, CUPE 1975, CUPE 3287 and the Faculty Association.

We ask that you consider becoming a United Way donor or continue your investment through the U of S Charitable Donations Payroll Deduction Plan. Together we have the power to change lives and build a better community.

Lynne Pearson, President,
United Way Board of Directors
Dean, U of S College of Commerce
