Vanier Cup officially set for Saskatoon in 2006

It’s now official. After a year in which the U of S’s bid to host the 2006 national university football championship was in doubt, it was announced Jan. 5 by Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) that the game will go ahead in Saskatoon on Nov. 25 next year.

CIS head Marg McGregor said, “All the conditions have been met and CIS is confident that Vanier Cup 2006 will be an unqualified success.”

U of S Huskie Athletics Director Ross Wilson told news media Jan. 5 that the University has made a commitment to meet all CIS requirements, which include improved lighting and artificial turf at Griffiths Stadium. Wilson said other facilities such as the stadium’s seating and washrooms will also likely be upgraded.

2006 will mark the first time since its inception in 1965 that the Vanier Cup will be held outside of Ontario. As in 2004, it will be held in Hamilton in 2005.
