WCVM gets Canada's only vet radiation oncologist

A 1995 graduate of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) has returned to Saskatoon and the college to take up a position as Canada’s only veterinary radiation oncologist.

Monique Mayer, a native of Vancouver, recently finished her M.Sc. in radiological health sciences and a two-year radiation oncology residency at Colorado State University. She is one of only 50 veterinary radiation oncologists certified by the American College of Veterinary Radiology.

In a Dec. 2 news release, Mayer said her position on the WCVM faculty completes the range of cancer services available to owners of companion animals at the college. Those services include her specialty as well as surgery, chemotherapy and medical imaging.

“Besides developing radiation oncology training for undergraduate and veterinary graduate students, we plan to create more awareness of radiation oncology among Canadian practitioners,” she said. “Our eventual goal is to establish a radiation oncology residency program at the College.”
