New $10,000 scholarship marks Sask. Centennial

The Saskatoon chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW/Saskatoon) announced in mid-December it will award a one-time $10,000 scholarship to a woman PhD student at the U of S in 2005, to mark Saskatchewan’s centennial year.

The Saskatchewan Centennial CFUW/Saskatoon Scholarship is funded by a donation from the estate of Dr. James and Jackie Newstead to the club’s scholarship trust fund. Application deadline for the new scholarship is Jan. 31, and details are available on the U of S Graduate Studies website.

CFUW/Saskatoon already offers one $5,000 PhD scholarship biennially, along with four $1,250 graduate scholarships and 10 $1,000 student scholarships annually.

More than 10,000 women belong to the 122 CFUW clubs across Canada. The clubs began in 1918. The Saskatoon club established its scholarship trust fund in 1940. It raises money from individual donations and fundraising activities like an annual Mammoth Book Sale.
