Exchange with Essex set

The U of S has signed an exchange agreement with the University of Essex in Colchester, England, northeast of London.

Its sponsors say this first U of S-wide exchange with a U.K. university will offer both Essex and U of S students a rich opportunity to study in each others’ areas of strength.

Essex is a 40-year-old school with strength in the social sciences and humanities. It ranks in Britain’s Top-10 for teaching and research excellence. Its government and law departments attract international students and its historical sociologists are highly regarded.

U of S History Professor Lisa Smith, an Essex graduate, says, “For students who study European/British history, studying in Europe itself cannot be beat. Being able to live in a place where history is all around you is so important.” She adds the U of S offers opportunities for British students to expand their education, for instance on native-newcomer history or the history of the Canadian West.

The exchange was established following research and visits by Professors Paul Bidwell and Smith.
