University buys land from the city for $1

For just $1, the University has purchased a piece of land adjacent to College Drive that will provide the opportunity to develop a unique new gateway to campus.

The property, almost one acre located between the President’s Residence and College Drive at the top of the University Bridge, was part of a package of land acquired by the City of Saskatoon many years ago to allow for widening of College Drive.  According to Judy Yungwirth, director of University corporate administration, the property was left over after the widening project and has since become “weedy and ugly”.  In purchasing the land, the University will assume its maintenance.  In the short-term, that means simply keeping the area mowed, she said.

For the long term, the University will explore landscape design options to integrate the property into adjacent land, said Yungwirth, and to develop a landmark feature visible from College Drive.
