ITS pilots two new online services

Information Technology Services (ITS) has launched two one-year pilot projects that offer web conferencing and online tutorials.

The web conferencing project, using a program called Elluminate, will allow people to hold live meetings over great distances using computers. It enables meeting participants to share audio, video, whiteboard applications and even participate in a chat room. They can also work collectively on documents and view presentations. For distance education, the service will allow instructors to lecture and share PowerPoint like they would in a conventional classroom.

For more information about web conferencing, go to http://webconf.usask.ca/.

The online tutorial pilot project, called TeachUS-IT, offers online tutorials to students, staff and faculty on Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. They help the user by providing written text, audio and guided practice, and they offer instruction at the introductory, intermediate and advanced levels.

The project offers a limited number of free accounts to any U of S person wishing to use the tutorials. Students were given the first opportunity to use them in September, and the accounts are now available to all members of the University community on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested are encouraged to try the demonstration tutorial on the TeachUS-IT website. For the demo and more information about this project, go to: http://teachusit.usask.ca.
