A faithful reader of On Campus News (we’ll call him ‘M’) made an interesting observation after receiving his April 21 issue of the paper. Apparently he had heard, both on and off campus, numerous references to the ‘chiller project’ but none of those references included an answer to the burning question, “what exactly is a chiller anyway?”
You can imagine his delight then, when he opened the paper and spotted the story “Chiller project delayed” (he wasn’t delighted it was delayed – he was delighted at the prospect someone might finally explain chillers to him).
Unfortunately, after reading the story, all 265 words of it, M was no further ahead. The person who wrote the story understands chillers. The people overseeing the chiller project understand chillers. M has kindly pointed out we should not make the assumption everyone understands chillers.
So with apologies, we offer this for M, and all our readers inadvertently left out in the cold by chillers:
A chiller is a large piece of equipment that cools water. That water is then circulated through a series of pipes into various campus buildings where it cools the interior air – air cooling as opposed to air conditioning. The water circulates back to the chiller to be re-cooled, and the cycle begins again.
Like the steam system used to heat buildings in winter, the chiller system is centralized in the Heating Plant, eliminating the need for air conditioning plants in each building. The University currently runs two chillers. A third (the aforementioned ‘chiller project’) is being added to ensure there is enough chilling capacity to supply new buildings as they are completed (the expanded WCVM, the Academic Health Sciences centre, etc.).
