VANCOUVER – A vehicle designed by University of British Columbia students can travel from Vancouver to Halifax on just a gallon of gasoline, a UBC news release said recently.
The futuristic single-occupancy vehicle defeated 40 teams from Canada, the U.S., and India to win the top prize as most fuel-efficient at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Supermileage Competition, held in June in Michigan.
UBC vehicle managed 3,145 miles per gallon, which means it could go from Vancouver to Halifax on a gallon of gas – costing less than $5 at the pump. The nearest competitor, Universite Laval, achieved 1,823 miles per gallon with its vehicle.
This is the fourth straight victory for UBC students at the competition. Last year, the team won after reaching 1,600 miles per gallon.
Post-secondary review launched
REGINA – MLA Warren McCall will head a provincial review of accessibility and affordability of post-secondary education, the government said recently in a news release.
The review will examine issues like student financial assistance programs and removing financial barriers for students and their families. The announcement comes after the government pledged in its 2006 budget to freeze tuition at the Universities of Saskatchewan and Regina through 2008.
Consultations with student association and post-secondary institutions last year pointed to the need for a review, said Advanced Education and Employment Minister Pat Atkinson.
McCall will prepare an interim report by January, and the final report and recommendations will be released in the fall of 2007.
UVic to view ocean floor
VICTORIA – Scientists and the general public will now have access to images, sounds and live data from the ocean floor thanks to a website set up by The Victoria Experimental Network Under the Sea (VENUS) project.
VENUS, led by the University of Victoria, is a data management and archive system that allows unrestricted access to long-term ocean observations, a news release said. The VENUS facility includes a three-kilometre network of fibre optic cables and instruments in Saanich Inlet. A 40-kilometre leg will be installed in the Strait of Georgia near Vancouver later this year. The VENUS website is at www.venus.uvic.ca.
