Tuffy, an 18-year-old Appaloosa gelding, was in pretty bad shape when he arrived at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine’s Veterinary Medical Centre in Saskatoon late one October night.

"He was very close to not making it," said Dr. Fernando Marqués, a specialist in large animal internal medicine at the WCVM. He and his resident, Dr. Sara Higgins, were on duty the night of Tuffy's arrival.

But thanks to some innovative thinking by WCVM clinicians, Tuffy recovered after a two-foot stick impaled his chest cavity.
