Following the most recent January 2023 report, the College of Medicine has earned the satisfaction of the accrediting body across 96 elements, up from 93 in a 2020 update.
“This is fantastic news and speaks to the level of trust and confidence we have built with the CACMS through our consistent monitoring and reporting since the 2017 full site visit,” said Dr. Preston Smith (MD), dean of the medical school.
“These outstanding results are some of the strongest of any medical doctor program in the country. We could not have achieved this without strong engagement from students, staff, faculty, and leadership both in the UGME program and across the entire college.”
The College of Medicine achieved full accreditation in the wake of a complete onsite review in 2017. The next CACMS visit is scheduled for 2026.
Over the past few decades, the school has worked through accreditation challenges that required a significant overhaul of the program to permanently address ongoing issues. The college followed a plan, The Way Forward, which was developed specifically for this purpose and released in 2013.
“We achieved a very significant turnaround for our college and for us that means we are delivering a program of which we can be proud,” Smith said. “For Saskatchewan people it means we are supporting the needs of our patients and health system by training great future physicians. This further success is built on our commitment to continuous quality improvement. If we do that well, we also take care of accreditation.”
