Local dancers take top honours

Four dancers with ties to Saskatchewan were recently awarded top honours at an Aboriginal dance competition.

The Indian National FInals Powwow (INFP) was held Nov. 1011 in Las Vegas, Nev. Indigenous dancers from across North America met in Las Vegas last week to compete in the first ever Indian National Finals Powwow (INFP).

Saskatchewan-born dancers swept the INFP, taking top prize in four out of nine categories. Among them is Laryn Oakes, a U of S student who is also the granddaughter of Gordon Oakes Red Bear.

Winning in her category, the Women’s Fancy Shawl, was "unreal," Oakes told the Saskatoon StarPhoenix. "I wish there was a camera behind the curtain to see my reaction."
