USask asks community to help celebrate spring 2020 graduates online

Graduation ceremonies and powwow at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) are a time to acknowledge academic achievements and a time to celebrate with family, friends and members of the community.

This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, USask will be taking these festivities online

“The past few months have been challenging for all of us, dealing with a global health crisis that has fundamentally changed our lives,” said USask President Peter Stoicheff. “With everyone’s health and safety as a top priority, we’ve invited our spring 2020 graduates to share on social media how they are marking their graduation.”

Community members are also invited to help pay tribute to the class of 2020 by posting messages using #USaskClassOf2020 on social media, beginning now until June 1.

“I believe that for many students, including myself, graduation is a symbol of accomplishing something that you may have thought is not possible,” said USask graduating Bachelor of Music (Honours) student Angela Gjurichanin. “USask taking the graduation celebrations online reinforces the idea of support and that somebody stands behind you and celebrates your success.”

On June 1, USask will relaunch a graduation celebration website, which will include special video messages, a compilation of #USaskClassOf2020 social media posts, and news stories highlighting the amazing work of USask graduates.

“We may be physically apart but this is a great alternative to collectively recognize, far and wide, the tremendous achievements of our students,” said Stoicheff. “We hope to celebrate the class of 2020 in person at a later date.”

USask-themed GIFs are available by searching “USask” on Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok. Special USask class of 2020 profile frames are also available for a limited time by searching “USask” on Facebook.
