The tick factor

Ticks, the little blood-sucking arachnids that have become part of Saskatchewan summers, and the diseases they carry are the focus of a new study being led by the University of Saskatchewan’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM).

"Once you get over the ‘ick factor,' they're really quite pretty," says Katharina Lohmann, associate professor, large animal internal medicine specialist and project leader for the study. The research focuses on testing for tick-borne bacteria Anaplasma phagocytophilum, which causes granulocytic anaplasmosis in horses and humans, and Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes Lyme disease.
