U of S ready to welcome new students to campus

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - August 30, 2013 SASKATOON - More than 2500 new students will begin their university experience at the University of Saskatchewan next week, when first-year students will take part in orientation. The university together with University of Saskatchewan Students Union (USSU) will kick off its renowned Orientation and Welcome Week activities beginning September 3.

Media are invited to attend the following Welcome Week activities:
Tuesday, September 3: Orientation - Day One
9:30 am: Kick-off activities (in the Bowl)
9:50 am: President Ilene Busch-Vishniac will give a short address to welcome students and families (in front of the Peter MacKinnon building). She is available for interviews immediately following her address.
10 am: Get to know your campus sessions (in the Bowl and Place Riel)
10 am: LIVE Expo information fair will feature over 1000 interactive booths, promotional contests, games, and freebies (Education Gym)
11 am: Live music and beer gardens in the Bowl
1 pm: Connect with your college (students spend time in their chosen colleges)
Wednesday, September 4: Orientation - Day Two
9 am - 3:30 pm: Additional welcome activities for specific student groups, including:
1. Aboriginal First-Year Student Welcome is being hosted by the Aboriginal Students' Centre (ASC) (Marquis Hall)
2. International Student Welcome will be offered by the International Student and Study Abroad Centre (ISSAC)
3. St. Thomas More College students can attend the St. Thomas More College Student Welcome (STM)
4. Greystone Scholar Sneak Peek, hosted by the Greystone Scholars Society, a student group made up of the university's top, high-achieving students (Physics 105)
5. Media interviews can be arranged with any of the above centres
11 am: Live music and beer gardens in the Bowl
Thursday, September 5: First Day of Classes
8 am: U of S Alumni Association pancake breakfast - free pancakes for staff and students
11 am: Live music and beer gardens in the Bowl
8 pm: Carless drive-in movie in the Bowl
August 28-September 3: Welcome Centre (Room 70 Lower Place Riel)
The Welcome Centre will be open over the long weekend as a resource for helping new students get to know the university, what services are available and where to find things.
