University's Jay Kalra wins RBC's Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - June 24, 2013 The University of Saskatchewan's Dr. Jay Kalra is being honoured with NBA all-star Steve Nash, former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson and other community leaders. The winners are being honoured at the fifth annual 2013 RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant awards.

Over 600 nominations were received for the awards, from which 75 finalists were shortlisted by a panel of judges comprised of past winners and dignitaries. More than 30,000 votes were cast online, the highest number received in the award's history.
"I am grateful for the support from everyone, especially the university," said Kalra. "It is a tremendous honour for me to be chosen as one of the top 25 Canadian immigrants."
Kalra, is a professor of pathology in the College of Medicine at the university and has served as head of the Department of Pathology, and head of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Saskatoon Health Region.
He has been a pioneer in establishing guidelines for thyroid-function testing, quality assurance programs and laboratory use in health care. For the past several years, Kalra has also been involved in quality care and patient safety. He has over 150 research communications to his credit, with major research work in the area of applied biochemistry related to oxygen-free radicals in various clinical diseases, including heart failure and atherosclerosis.
Kalra is a leader and community builder in several altruistic organizations including Saskatoon Folkfest and the Rotary Club. He is an active fellow with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. On the U of S campus he has held a number of governance positions and is actively involved in the campus community and University Council.
The RBC Top 25 award winners will receive a commemorative plaque and a $500 donation to a registered Canadian charity of their choice. Winners will be featured in the July print edition of Canadian Immigrant Magazine.
