University of Saskatchewan Huskies honour troops at Friday's football game

The U of S Huskie football team will once again honour the Canadian Forces during its home game on September 19, against the University of Calgary Dinos.

Organizers of the annual tribute say the contest between the two teams is a spectacular way for the football program and the community at large to honour and salute the men and women who serve in the Canadian Forces.

"We're extremely honoured for this opportunity to recognize the Canadian Armed Forces," said Brian Towriss, head coach of the Huskies football program. "We know this will be a special game for everyone involved and I'm certain our fans will be anxious to join us in saluting these men and women for their service to the country."

The Huskies will once again wear custom-designed uniforms for the game against Calgary. The uniforms include nameplates and patches that tell stories of support and honour. The uniforms combine the arid camouflage worn by our Canadian troops in Afghanistan with the traditional Green and White of the U of S.

"I can't say enough about our football club and their support for the Canadian Forces," said David Dubé long time Huskie supporter and football alumnus. "By honouring our troops with this game and as a community, we are recognizing the sacrifices of everyone who wears the uniform, as well as their families and friends who support them every single day."

Contributions to the Soldier On Fund will be accepted from fans when they enter the stadium, to be matched by the Heather Ryan and L. David Dubé Foundation. To date the event has raised over $75,000 for the charity that provides financial aid to ill or injured members of the Canadian Forces.

Kickoff is set for 7:09 pm at Griffith Stadium in PotashCorp Park on Friday, Sept. 19, 2014.
