U of S reacts to federal budget

"I am delighted with today's federal budget announcement that recognizes the value to society of a university like ours," said U of S President Peter Stoicheff.

"This budget increases access to post-secondary education for Indigenous people and improves funding programs for all students. It also increases research funding and provides dedicated investment in university infrastructure."

"The support in today's budget for Indigenous education is of particular interest to us as we've made it clear that Indigenous success is a priority for the University of Saskatchewan," said Stoicheff. "We have a responsibility and we are committed to being the best place we can be for indigenous people."

"Additionally, we have some urgent needs for infrastructure investment and I'm pleased to see the government is committed to moving on this as quickly as possible for the post-secondary education sector. The investment in infrastructure will help us do our part to grow a knowledge-based economy."

Today's budget announced the highest increase in new federal research funding in over a decade—an important investment that will support the university's research agenda.

"We are also excited to see a 50 per cent increase in the Canada Student Grant program and to see that this investment is a non-repayable form of student financial assistance. These improvements increase opportunities for all Canadian students to access universities," said Stoicheff.
