Sexual assault and harassment continues to be in the spotlight, with high-profile cases emerging in the media and the gathering strength of the empowering #metoo movement. It is also an issue in university environments––in 2016, the U of S introduced its own sexual assault prevention policy, to build awareness and educate the university community.
Benedet, a professor and co-director of the Centre for Feminist Legal Studies at the University of British Columbia’s Peter A. Allard School of Law, will explore issues around sexual assault and harassment, with specific focus on consent.
An expert in the criminal law of sexual offences, Benedet’s research has considered sexual violence against women, sexual assault of persons with mental disabilities, sexual assault of older women, the age of consent, and sexual assault cases involving intoxicated complainants. She also researches on the legal regulation of pornography and prostitution as practices of sex inequality.
The lecture is free and open to the public. Benedet will be available for media interviews following the event.
The McKercher Lecture Series at the College of Law brings a wide range of guest speakers to enlighten and engage the U of S community and beyond. The lecture poster can be found here.
