Three USask graduate students awarded prestigious Vanier scholarships

SASKATOON – Three University of Saskatchewan (USask) students have each been awarded a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship — the most esteemed scholarships for doctoral students in the country, recognizing academic excellence, leadership, and innovative research

Each scholarship provides $150,000 over three years to support world-class research.

This year’s recipients represent a diverse range of disciplines and research interests. Arianna Gibson, a Métis doctoral student in clinical psychology, is exploring the parenting experiences of individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Her research takes a strengths-based approach to reduce stigma and improve support systems for parents with BPD. Gibson also leads anti-violence research initiatives across Saskatchewan, including her work with RESOLVE SK and the Saskatchewan Anti-Violence Research Network.

Jeremy Irvine, a doctoral student in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources and a member of Yellow Quill First Nation, is developing sustainable pest control methods to protect red clover crops. His research focuses on pheromone-based solutions that safeguard both crops and pollinators. Irvine is also a strong advocate for Indigenous representation in science and higher education, and he hopes his achievement will inspire others in his community.

Jinnath Rehana Ritu, a doctoral student in biology, is investigating the effects of the neurotoxin BMAA on learning and memory in zebrafish. Her work bridges environmental science and neurobehaviour to better understand the long-term risks of neurotoxin exposure and inform public health and environmental policy. Ritu’s research builds on her previous work in sustainable aquaculture and reflects her commitment to protecting both ecosystems and human health.

“We are incredibly proud of our Vanier scholars and the remarkable contributions they are making in their fields,” said Dr. Debby Burshtyn (PhD), dean of the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. “USask is very fortunate to attract these research leaders to our graduate programs.”

These awards underscore USask’s commitment to fostering innovative research that addresses critical societal and environmental challenges.
