“We can’t have a great university without access to a great city,” President Peter Stoicheff told the governance and priorities committee Monday night. “The university is a talent magnet, which will draw innovation here.”
Though not yet officially endorsed, an MOU could cover initiatives that serve both the interests of the city and the university, such as land development and the new twin-pad rink currently under construction.
Additionally, the university owns about 18 per cent of land within a close radius of the city centre, and university population—which increases every September as a result of a new academic year—accounts for a growing civic population as well.
