USask announces new Forest Resources Certificate
The new Forest Resources Certificate meets the industry demand for graduates equipped with the field skills and knowledge to excel in a forestry-related position.
By Brett MakulowichThe new Forest Resources Certificate provides a base-knowledge of forest ecology theory and applications in Saskatchewan complemented by experiential learning. Students will gain a broad understanding of plant identification, ecological classification schemes, forest ecology, and data collection techniques. The new certificate is offered by College of Agriculture and Bioresources (AgBio) at the University of Saskatchewan (USask).
“The new Forest Resources Certificate signals to potential employers that graduates have the knowledge and field skills to excel in a forestry-related position,” said Dr. Tom Yates (PhD), associate dean, academic, of AgBio. “The Forest Resources Certificate is the sixth new educational program launched by AgBio since 2022. AgBio continues to develop and deliver high-quality, experiential education that equips graduates with technical expertise, critical thinking, and adaptability for leadership roles.”
Students taking the certificate can tailor their studies to their interests with electives related to forest measurements and techniques, modelling, planning, hydrology, and ecological restoration. These electives align with optional accreditation concentrations from the Forest Professional Regulators of Canada.
“The forest industry continues to grow, and this new certificate is the first step in a long-term vision to establish a program in Saskatchewan that meets requirements for the Registered Professional Forester (RPF) accreditation,” said Dr. Bryan Mood (PhD), lecturer and renewable resource management program co-ordinator in AgBio. “Currently students must attend schools outside of Saskatchewan to receive the RPF accreditation.”
Graduates of the certificate have potential career opportunities in forestry-related positions such as silviculture, Geographic Information Systems and data management, planning, forest inventory, wood measurement, and forest operations/compliance.
USask students can take the Forest Resources Certificate concurrently with their undergraduate degree. The certificate is recommended for students in the following programs: Bachelor of Science in Renewable Resource Management, Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, or environment-related BSc majors at USask. Applications for admissions are open, with the first cohort of students to begin classes in September 2026. Questions about the program can be directed to AgBio Student Services.
