Huskie athletes score big in the classroom

Close to 40 per cent of Huskies earned all-academic team honours.

It was a great year for University of Saskatchewan Huskie athletes in 2015-16, not only on the field, on the ice and in the gym, but in the classroom.

On Tuesday morning, Huskie Athletics honoured 168 athletes, managers and trainers—more than 40 per cent of all Huskie team members—for their academic performance in 2015-16, during a season in which U of S teams won a record four Canada West conference titles and a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championship captured by the Huskies women’s basketball team.

The list includes a whopping 81 U of S students who were named CIS Academic All-Canadians (for posting an academic average of at least 80 per cent while taking a minimum of 18 credit units), with other Huskie Athletics members honoured for posting an average of at least 74.5 per cent while completing 24 credit units.

“The success of our students is an accomplishment Huskie Athletics is very proud of,” said athletic director Basil Hughton, noting that each of the 15 Huskie teams featured All-Academic Team members. “We hope everyone understands how hard these student-athletes, trainers and managers work to succeed in their respective colleges at the University of Saskatchewan.”
