USask tops Canada, reaches top 10 worldwide in water research
The University of Saskatchewan (USask) has cracked the top 10 worldwide for water research and scholarship in a prestigious international university ranking.
By Research Profile and ImpactUSask placed ninth globally and first in Canada in the Water Resources area of the annual ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS).
This achievement recognizes the internationally acclaimed research, scholarly, and artistic works around the world’s water taking place at the university.
“From our unique research centres to all the staff and faculty across USask exploring the depths of research and scholarship, this is a tremendous recognition,” said USask Vice-President Research Baljit Singh. “USask strives to turn local research into global impact, and it is heartening to receive these international accolades.”
USask moved up in the 2026 GRAS in five subjects, including Water Resources, Medical Technology (up to 101-150 tier), Chemistry (up to 151-200 tier), and Education (up to 301-400 tier).
The university also moved up into the 201-300 tier in Nursing, a massive leap after being unranked in the GRAS last year.
The GRAS evaluates around 2,000 universities from countries and continents around the world. The research and scholarship of each institution is evaluated based on indicators in five categories that consider faculty successes, international impact, and research outputs.
“These rankings are a recognition of USask’s hard work and dedication to top-tier research and education across so many programs,” said USask Interim Provost and Vice-President Academic Dr. Patricia McDougall (PhD). “USask is an international leader in research and education, and we are proud these rankings reflect that.”
